SineImage eSFR resolution test chart with software can automatically calculate several key image quality factors including sharpness, lateral chromatic aberration, gradation response, color response and noise.
Fully compatible with the low-contrast Edge SFR specification, the new standard ISO 12233:2014 replaces the 2000 standard, because the previous use of high-contrast test charts is prone to out-of-bounds or measurement errors, lacks the gradation response of the progressive group rating system, and has only a few functions suitable for automatic analysis.
The design of the SineImage eSFR resolution test chart is based on the low-contrast edge SFR specification defined in ISO 12233:2014.
The test chart has the following three versions:
Standard version: basic functions
Enhanced version: adds additional squares, wedges and color patterns
Extended version: similar to the enhanced version, but expanded to 16:9, suitable for HD movies and movies
Currently, we all use inkjet printing to make eSFR resolution test charts, and the enhanced version is printed in photographic mode. All Sine Image's ISO12233:2014 eSFR resolution test charts are fully compliant with ISO standards. Sine Image's eSFR ISO module provides highly automated support for analyzing test charts.
Standard version
The standard version of the ISO12233:2014 eSFR resolution test chart has an aspect ratio of 3:2. To meet more testing requirements, we have added enhanced and extended versions, which add squares, hyperbolas and color blocks at the edge of the image for testing performance. These charts are fully compliant with the standard.
ISO12233:2014 eSFR is similar to the low-contrast E-SFR test chart made according to Section 6.1 and Appendix C of the ISO standard document. However, there are several differences. Here is a comparison of their differences:
(1) 20-step OECF grayscale blocks replace the original 16-step
(2) The square focus pattern in the center area of the test chart is right-angled (to increase the MTF measurement area). The purpose of this design is to reduce interference with automatic edge detection.
(3) There are four focus marks, replacing the original three to help automated area detection.
(4) There is an additional mark above the focus mark on the lower left to detect the chart direction.
This test card is for use with the fully automated eSFR ISO module, which was added in version 4.0.
Enhanced version
The enhanced 2014 eSFR chart has all the features of the standard chart and also has a 3:2 aspect ratio. Six additional tilted squares are added to the edges of the image for testing performance and a hyperbola is added for visual analysis or analysis on the Slant Edge module of iQstest. 16 additional color patches are also added. These additional areas are not covered by the standard but do not affect compliance. The differences between the enhanced and standard charts are as follows:
(1) Six additional tilted squares are added to the edges of the image for testing performance.
(2) Several spatial frequency hyperbolas, similar to CIPA reference ISO standards, are used for visual analysis or analysis on the Slant Edge module of iQstest software.
(3) 16 additional color patches (inkjet or color LVT) are added, the colors are similar to the industry standard 24 color chart
This version of the resolution test chart is used with the fully automatic eSFR ISO module, which was added in version 4.0.
Extended version
The Extended ISO12233:2014 eSFR chart includes all the features of the Enhanced chart (6 diagonal squares, hyperbola, and 16 color patches), but it is extended to a 16:9 aspect ratio. 16:9 is for HDTV and film (and also meets the 3:2 aspect ratio required by cameras). It also complies with the standard.
This version of the chart is used with the fully automatic eSFR ISO module, which was added in Imatest version 4.0.

ISO12233:2014 eSFR resolution test chart usage guide
The test chart has nine tilted rectangles with a contrast ratio of 4:1 and uses OECF progressive groups. The sides of the tilted rectangles can be used to test spatial frequency response and lateral chromatic aberration. All rectangles have focus aids for manual or auto focus.
The 20-level grayscale OECF pattern surrounds the center of the chart to measure the tonal response, gamma, white balance and noise characteristics of the imaging system. The measurement plates are arranged radially and averagely to reduce the measurement error of light drop. The noise test series covers a wide range, including density, scene-referenced raw pixel noise and ISO 15739 visual noise, signal-to-noise ratio, and dynamic range.
SineImage offers two additional eSFR test chart versions that use the extra space to optimize and extend the test chart beyond the standard, with six additional tilted rectangles to measure sharpness outside the imaging area.
Four alignment marks for automatic detection of Imatest eSFR ISO module features
Sixteen color patches represent the colors of real-world scenes and are used to analyze and present precise or preferred colors.
According to another part of the ISO standard, four pairs of hyperbolic wedges were added to test the ultimate resolution and moire.
The enhanced version of the ISO12233:2014 eSFR resolution test chart optimizes the test chart ratio to 3:2, and the ISO12233:2014 eSFR resolution test chart extension board extends the test chart ratio to 16:9, supporting imaging systems with a wider viewing angle.
